What Actually Happens in an Online Physio Appointment?

By Brandon Hughes-Philpott · Physiotherapist · 3 October 2026

If you’ve never had an online physio appointment, it’s normal to wonder what it involves. Do you just talk about your injury? Can a physiotherapist assess your movement through a screen? And will you leave with a plan you can actually follow?

An online physiotherapy appointment is a real consultation with a physiotherapist over video. We’ll talk through what’s going on, look at how you move where it’s relevant, and work together on practical next steps. The main difference from an in-person appointment is that we’re not in the same room.

Before your online physio appointment

You’ll receive a link to join the video call. Before the appointment, try to find a quiet, private space with a reliable internet connection. A phone, tablet or computer with a camera is usually enough.

It can help to have a little room to stand, walk or perform a movement if your physiotherapist asks you to. Wear comfortable clothes that make it easy to move. You may also want to have a chair or a clear section of wall nearby.

If you have recent scan results, a list of medications, or notes about when your symptoms began, keep them handy. You don’t need to prepare a perfect explanation. We can work through the details together.

What happens during the appointment?

1. We talk about your symptoms and goals

We’ll start by discussing what’s been bothering you, when it began and how it affects your daily life, work, training or sport. Your physiotherapist may ask about your health history, what you’ve already tried and what you’d like to get back to doing.

This conversation helps us understand the bigger picture, not just where it hurts.

2. Your physiotherapist guides you through an assessment

Depending on your symptoms, we may ask you to show us a movement, change position, or perform a simple exercise while we watch. Your physiotherapist can give you clear instructions and adjust the assessment as you go.

An online assessment isn’t identical to an in-person one, but seeing how you move and hearing what you notice can provide useful information. You can pause at any time or tell us if a movement feels uncomfortable.

3. We explain what we think is going on

We’ll talk through the findings in plain English and answer your questions. You should come away with a clearer idea of what may be contributing to your symptoms and what the next steps could be.

You don’t need to understand medical jargon or have a diagnosis ready before the call.

4. We agree on a plan

Your plan will depend on your situation and goals. It may include advice, changes to training or activity, and exercises that you can try at home or in the gym. We can go through exercises together during the call so you know how to do them.

The aim is to make the plan practical and relevant to you—not to hand over a long list of exercises without explaining how they fit.

Is online physiotherapy suitable for me?

Online physiotherapy can be a useful option for many muscle and joint problems, sports injuries and rehabilitation check-ins. It may suit you if you live a long way from a clinic, have a busy schedule, or prefer to discuss your injury from home.

It isn’t the right option for every person or every problem. If your physiotherapist thinks you need an in-person examination, another health professional, or further investigation, they’ll talk that through with you and help you work out what to do next.

Do I need any special equipment?

Usually, no. A device with a camera and a good internet connection are the main things you’ll need. Depending on your goals, your physiotherapist may suggest having a chair, a clear space to move, or your usual training equipment nearby.

What happens after the appointment?

Before you finish, you’ll have time to ask questions and check that you understand the plan. Your physiotherapist will explain what to work on and when to check in again. If your plan includes exercises, you’ll know how to perform them and how they relate to your goals.

An online physio appointment should leave you with a clearer understanding of what’s going on and a sensible next step.
